Sony Cybershot RX10- A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing

Sony Cybershot RX10- A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing
October 2013, Carl Garrard
Sony's Cybershot division hard at work, again. This time making an impressively spec'd fixed lens digicam with an optimized 24-200mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* lens in front of a 1" sized sensor. The price? $1,299.00 SRP.  While that price is steep from any angle, you need to consider what you are getting for that price. First of all, there's no DSLR lens available with a 24-200mm equivalent focal range and constant f/2.8 aperture anywhere on the planet. Also, this is a Carl Zeiss lens with T* coating optimized in front of one of the best mid sized sensors I've ever tested. Add too a manual aperture ring w/detent switch for purists. That is the star of the show here. Also the camera body itself is also pretty impressive in build with a magnesium and high tech composite frame. There's a top mounted LCD, a slew of external controls, a big tiltable LCD, and very nice big EVF at 1.4 million dots with .7X 35mm equivalent view (basically the same view size you see in expensive full frame digital SLRs). Still a lot of money for you? Don't read on. Sound like a good deal? Have a peek further... (specs first, commentary below them).

    Sony DSCRX10 BEST CURRENT PRICES

The raft of specifications this camera offers is just the beginning, its feature set includes a host of professional video features and still features that should make both sides of that equation smile. And if you like to do both, well then, this camera suddenly becomes a pretty good deal all things considered.

For still photographers, there are a few features that caught my eye besides what I've noted already. The RX10 has a 3 stop ND filter that can be set so that you can use the f/2.8 aperture even in bright daylight. It also helps you to stop down for long exposures without having at attach an additional ND filter or use smaller apertures that may degrade image quality- in short, it's an excellent addition to this camera.

There are many customizeable controls here too, and some controls I note are optimally placed. The AEL lock button for example is situated perfectly, and below it the FN button which conjures up a quick navi screen for fast adjustments. The menu system is much like the RX100/II cameras, which also mimic the same menu system on Sony's Alpha DSLRS- which is their best menu system to date. The lens has an aperture ring with detents that can be switched off for stepless aperture control. The main zoom ring doubles as a manual focusing ring as well. Pretty damn cool.

The Cybershot division have made some extremely good decisions in this camera, checking off many of my personal desires in handling and form/function. Not to mention that the camera has that awesome lens on the front that also serves as an excellent macro lens, a very good EVF and tilting LCD. It even manages to look practical yet futuristic in styling at the same time. Pretty cool camera if you ask me.

I'll more than likely prepare a full review on this camera in the future sometime. A camera like this seems to me to be the ultimate professional's travel cam, and also an excellent backpacker's delight. Cybershot have been on tear lately, and in some ways are outshining their other camera divisions if you ask me!

    Cheers!

    1. Great, great camera - must have it. Can you confirm if the front of the lens is threaded to accept 62mm filters? Thanks.

    2. Yes it is threaded, click on the image for the front view and you'll see the 62mm marking on the lens too :)

I think this camera isn't for the masses like the RX100 was, but like the R1 it's going to become a serious classic. I like that you can shoot waist level like the R1 too, because of the flip up screen.

    3. Carl: Yes, everyone is going "gaga" over the new Cybershot RX10. I agree. Nice package, no doubt. But as a "travel camera", why not consider comparing it to a Sony A77 with the Sony 18-250 mm lens (as I have taken on more than one overseas trip). You get a longer zoom (24-375 equivalent), a larger APS-C size sensor, 24 megapixels, AND built in GPS!!! At current prices, it isn't that much more. Just thought I would throw that out there. Cheers, Bob

    4. Much larger and heavier camera and lens combo, lens isn't weather sealed, more expensive package, 28mm, not 24mm wide, you miss out on the constant f/2.8 lens, ... shall I go on?

    5. Probably great comera for travelling. Aavo

    6. 24-200mm f/2.8? I see you've been taken in by the marketers, Carl. The lens is an 8.8-73.3mm f/2.8, which is equivalent to 24-200mm f/7.6.

      ReplyDelete
    7. Yes your correct when it comes to equivalent depth of field, however, field of view and light transmission equals 28-200mm f/2.8 FF equivalent. I think its obvious we all know that.
